What is an Ackee?

Ackee is Jamaica’s national fruit. It resembles a large pink mango or guava with a yellow flesh. When cooked, ackees look like scrambled eggs. It is popular as a hearty Jamaican breakfast and as an appetizer with lunch or dinner. As a tropical evergreen tree, it can grow 40 feet in height.

When the fruit is fully ripe, only the soft interior of the ackee is edible. Our highly experienced growers know exactly when ackees are ripe and ready. We select ackees that are completely open, with the black seed and yellow fruit clearly visible in the scarlet pod.

Ackee’s Nutritional Benefits

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), “Ackee is an unsaturated fat, and has additional health benefits through its high protein content, being a good source of vitamins B and C, zinc, calcium and fiber.”

Let’s review some of the fruit’s benefits more closely:

Rich in Potassium

Ackee is rich in potassium, which acts as a vasodilator (helps widen the blood vessels).

May Reduce Cancer Risk

Ackee contains saponins, which may reduce your cancer risk.

High Protein

The fruit’s protein content is great for those who abstain from meat.

Good Source of Calcium

It has a good amount of calcium for building strong bones.

How To Eat Ackee

Jamaicans often cook ackee with codfish, tomatoes and onions, and serve with rice. Throughout West Africa, the fruit is commonly eaten raw, fried, or mixed in soups.
