What is Turmeric?

Commonly known as the “Super Spice,” turmeric is a plant related to ginger. It’s a supermodel of healing foods that has been benefitting humanity for centuries. It’s a detoxifying powder that is sprinkled into numerous recipes. Turmeric’s primary active ingredient, curcumin, continues to pleasantly surprise medical scientists. The bright orange spice is also used to add coloring to foods and cosmetics.

Turmeric’s Health Benefits

More than 500 medical studies show that turmeric may help fight certain cancers, diabetes, obesity and skin ailments. Let’s review several other associated benefits:

Helps Skin Conditions

Powder is used to create a paste for skin conditions that often occur after radiation treatments for breast cancer.

Dietary Supplement

Used as a dietary supplement for inflammation, arthritis, stomach, liver, and gallbladder problems.

May Reduce Heart Attacks

Curcumin may play a role in reducing the number of heart attacks bypass patients experience post-surgery.

Pain Management

Used in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily in South Asia, for breathing difficulties, fatigue, rheumatism, and pain management.

How To Use Turmeric

Dried turmeric powder is stored in a tightly sealed jar and kept in a cool, dark and dry place. Fresh turmeric rhizome (root) should be kept in the refrigerator. It adds color and taste to many West Indian curry dishes. It may be sprinkled onto chicken, beef, and vegetables as the foods are being sautéed.
