What Are Yellow Yams?

Commonly known as the “Jamaican yam,” the yellow yam is a root vegetable that’s been around for centuries. Some people confuse it with the sweet potato, however yellow yams are part of the Dioscoreae family; named after its yellow flesh, a color produced by its carotenoids.

Compared to the white yam, the yellow yam enjoys a longer period of vegetation and a shorter period of inactivity. With its dark brown exterior, yam’s shining yellow flesh is typically boiled or roasted.
